Why are turnover boxes in the food industry made from PP material?
In daily life, the plastic products we come into contact with most frequently are made of PP, PE, and PVC. The abbreviations PP, PE, and PVC stand for their English names: polypropylene, polyethylene, and polyvinyl chloride, respectively.
PP is one of the safer types of plastic; it’s commonly used to make packaging bags for food. Of course, PP comes in different grades—those used for food packaging must be food-grade. Among the three materials, PP has the lowest density and can float on water.
Ordinary plastic bags are typically made from PE, which has good toughness. PE is further divided into HDPE (high-density polyethylene) and LDPE (low-density polyethylene). The difference in density leads to significant variations in certain properties of these materials.
Some of the older-style slippers we often see are made from PVC. They feel soft in summer but become very hard in winter—this is closely related to PVC’s temperature sensitivity. At high temperatures, PVC decomposes and releases the toxic gas chlorine. Among the three materials, PVC has the highest density.
These kinds of polymer materials can generally be modified by adding other substances to enhance their overall performance or improve specific properties, making them suitable for specialized applications. Of course, after modification, the price may sometimes increase significantly.
