How should the e-commerce industry apply plastic hollow board turnover boxes?

With the rapid development of China’s e-commerce, online orders have led to a substantial increase in logistics and transportation. The use of transport packaging materials—such as small corrugated cardboard boxes and internal cushioning components (including shock-absorbing bubble wrap and air cushions)—has surged dramatically. At the heart of this trend lies a profound transformation in the very model of transport packaging.
Under the traditional sales model, a single周转箱 package undergoes multiple rounds of transportation before reaching the end retail outlet. In the e-commerce model, manufacturers make a single shipment to the e-commerce distribution center, generating the first instance of transportation and packaging waste—Waste 1. After the e-commerce order is fulfilled, the goods are delivered to consumers via express delivery and logistics, resulting in a second round of transportation and packaging waste—Waste 2. This newly generated secondary transportation issue ultimately leaves the packaging waste unrecoverable once it reaches the consumer. As a result, logistics packaging waste continues to accumulate day by day.
According to data from the State Post Bureau, in 2014, the country consumed a total of 14 billion express delivery waybills, 2 billion woven bags, 5.584 billion plastic bags, 2.1 billion envelopes, 6.7 billion packaging boxes, 11.45 billion meters of adhesive tape, and 2.01 billion internal cushioning materials. In 2015, the total consumption amounted to approximately 20.7 billion express delivery waybills, 3.1 billion woven bags, 8.268 billion plastic bags, 3.105 billion envelopes, 9.922 billion packaging boxes, 16.985 billion meters of adhesive tape, and 2.977 billion internal cushioning materials. Among these, the total length of adhesive tape alone could circle the Earth’s equator 425 times. In 2016, the volume of express delivery services reached 31.35 billion items, supporting online retail sales exceeding 4 trillion yuan, accounting for 12.5% of total retail sales of consumer goods. Furthermore, accelerating the industry’s transformation and upgrading and vigorously promoting the development of green postal services were identified as key priorities for the future.
The recycling of周转 boxes is challenging, and the reprocessing of corrugated cardboard generates significant pollution. Although China’s waste-paper recycling rate has been steadily increasing—from 27.5% in 2001 to 37.9% in 2007 and further up to 46% by 2014—it still falls far short of the over 70% recycling rates seen in developed countries worldwide. According to estimates by the China Association of Renewable Resources Recycling and Utilization, every ton of waste paper recycled and pulped can produce 0.8 tons of recycled paper, leaving a gap of 0.2 tons that must be filled by cutting down trees. Based on a 14-year recycling rate of 46%, the overall recycling efficiency amounts to only 36.8%. Moreover, the fiber structure within recycled paper is damaged, leading to a decline in its strength and other performance characteristics. Additionally, the production of recycled paper consumes more energy than the production of virgin paper, and processes such as de-sizing and decolorization place even greater environmental pressures. Currently, plastic hollow-board周转 boxes are widely used across various industries, including plastic周转 boxes for automotive inbound logistics, plastic周转 boxes for beer distribution, and antistatic周转 boxes, among others.
When small turnover boxes are used for e-commerce and stacked in large quantities for transportation, they often become crushed, deformed, and damage the goods. To overcome this issue and improve loading and unloading efficiency, both JD.com and Cainiao have adopted slanted-insert hollow board turnover boxes. After order items are packaged, they are sorted according to their destinations and loaded into these turnover boxes. Although this approach enhances reliability and loading efficiency, it fails to address the environmental concerns arising from secondary packaging. Moreover, the use of small turnover boxes equipped with cushioning components leads to reduced space utilization when these boxes are stacked inside larger containers. Therefore, there is a need to design a new type of turnover box that, to some extent, can reduce the amount of packaging materials used during transportation.
