Hollow boards possess a certain degree of thermosetting properties.

No matter where we go, we’ll always come across products made from plastic materials. Therefore, for the transportation industry, hollow board has indeed been a great help. It’s a high-quality material for transportation, and its cost is even more affordable than that of other materials. Not only does it have strong compression resistance, but hollow boards can also be categorized into thermosetting plastic hollow boards and thermoplastic plastic hollow boards. These two types have distinct characteristics: the former cannot be reshaped or reused, whereas the latter can be repeatedly remanufactured. Thermoplastic materials exhibit a significantly higher degree of physical elongation—typically ranging from 50% to 500%. At different elongation levels, the relationship between stress and strain isn’t entirely linear.
Thermosetting hollow boards are characterized by their inability to soften and be reshaped repeatedly upon heating, nor do they dissolve in solvents. This property is inherent in network polymers. During the first heating, these materials can soften and flow; when heated to a certain temperature, they undergo a chemical reaction—cross-linking and curing—which causes them to harden permanently. This transformation is irreversible, meaning that subsequent reheating will no longer allow the material to soften and flow again. It is precisely this unique property that enables thermosetting plastics to be molded: during the initial heating, the material becomes plastic and flows under pressure, filling the mold cavity completely, after which it cures into a product with a fixed shape and size. Before curing, the resin of thermosetting plastics typically exists as linear or branched-chain molecules; once cured, chemical bonds form between the molecular chains, creating a three-dimensional network structure. As a result, these materials not only cannot be remelted but also cannot dissolve in solvents. Thermosetting plastics are primarily used in harsh environments where insulation, wear resistance, electrical insulation, and high-voltage resistance are required. Most of the plastics used in such applications are thermosetting, with the most common examples being handles for frying pans and components for high- and low-voltage electrical appliances. Commonly used thermosetting plastic varieties include phenolic resins, urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine resins, unsaturated polyester resins, epoxy resins, silicone resins, and polyurethane.
